File-sharing (new indie music) Spree!
19th-Sep-2007 02:56 pm
art; everyone has a dark side
DISCLAIMER: The RIAA dictates that all music downloaded should be removed after previewing for twenty-four hours. What you do with the music you collect here is your own responsibility.

Now, I know we've been dead here for quite a while. So sorry about that, real life caught up on me and gave me a beating. At any rate, I figure here's a good way to reenergize this place! So, upload a song/album/whatever of your favorite and lesser-known indie artists. Sharing is caring and the best way to get out the word about a great artist is for people to hear for themselves. Fill out the form when posting, and link all your friends & friend-lists (regardless of if they're in this community or not).

This is about discovering new artists, and sharing the glory that is good music, so please try to keep everything legal and legit. The disclaimer is there for a reason, and if I catch you uploading major label artists or artists who clearly and specifically do not want any of their music shared, it will be removed and you will be banned - with the chance for appeal. All the same, be careful and double, double-check before you post it here. Thanks!

FILE-SHARING (new indie music) SPREE!
19th-Sep-2007 10:27 pm (UTC) - Indie/Lounge/Shoegaze
Artist: Jonathan Youngblood
Upload Link/File Type: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/ni2yiw - Two song zip file.
Similar Artists: Callupsie, Unwed Sailor
Random Facts/Etc: These are two instrumental pieces, which I like a lot better than the vocal songs of his. Still, good chill music that vaguely reminds me of instrumental Modest Mouse when I'm half asleep.
19th-Sep-2007 10:51 pm (UTC) - Indie/New Wave/Other
Artist: Elliot the Letter Ostrich
Upload Link/File Type: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/t3f50r - Two song zip file.
Similar Artists: For these two songs, think those Halloween compilation tapes famous 80s artists did way back when. That's all you need to know.
Random Facts/Etc: Getting ready for an early Halloween party? These will surely be a hit. Plus, their music featuring things other than zombies and werewolfs is pretty awesome too.
20th-Sep-2007 06:51 am (UTC) - Re: Indie/New Wave/Other
LOL, it's fantastic! Thank you! This will absolutely join the fun at Halloween! XD
21st-Sep-2007 05:49 am (UTC) - Re: Indie/New Wave/Other
Aren't they awesome? I don't like their old stuff as much, but this newer Halloween themed junk makes me squee like a cat being squeezed too hard. XD I have such a weird passion for Halloween-type songs.

Random Facts/Etc: Wikipedia tells me things like this: Notable outfits the band has toured with include The American Analog Set, Starflyer 59, Styrofoam, and David Bazan of Pedro the Lion. Also, they're super fantastic.

I really can't stop listening to Skeleton Key. :D
30th-Sep-2007 07:57 am (UTC) - Re: Indie/Alternative?
Margot - "Vampires in Blue Dresses"

I like their acoustic demo stuff a lot too, but that's another song of the same album as "Skeleton Key." If you're really interested in music, I also run a music community called musicpost where my friends and I share music online.

You don't have to join or anything, but you might want to trawl back through recent entries and maybe pick up some indie music along the way!
30th-Sep-2007 08:53 am (UTC) - Re: Indie/Alternative?
Oh, but I do want to join! That was basically the whole premise of the AYL community and the website it's based off of (that one is not my doing though). It's actually quite a little tale, I may actually post it there considering it would tie in well with the theme of the community. ;)

Thanks again for that Margot song, I love it too. I think I'm going to have to get some of their music for real now. I can't convince myself to pay money for albums of artists everyone and their mother knows, but I'll always happily forsake a few meals and knickknacks for the sake of awesome and lesser-known bands! :DD

21st-Sep-2007 06:24 am (UTC) - No downloads, but I have links!
So, I don't have downloads for you on these as my downloads I got from iTunes and they're all inhibited with what-all iTunes does to them. :C I can provide links to hear and download the amazing for yourselves though! Anyone else with good bands but no files can link them in this thread too. It'll be the sad thread of good music or something, IDK.

As it turns out, and old friend from high school has a music MySpace. She's always been amazing, so check her out. It's very mellow and kind of sad music, but still fabulous all the same.

Just found out about this band and haven't had time to buy anything of theirs yet, but I think this is definitely going to be one of the next things on my "to buy" list.

Ok, first a bit of info. My favorite band ever played together for about 10 years, and then finally split in December of 2005. They've since splintered off into different groups, solo projects, etc, all of which are awesome. They're relatively unknown, but have a massive following anyway. So so sad that they never hit it big. So I'll begin with the original band.

Artist: Jump, Little Children
Upload Link/File Type: Because of You- mp3. Over at Box.net. No one song really is a good example of their overall style. However, as awesome as their CDs are, you don't know their music 'til you've heard it live and in person. ::shivers:: It's AMAZING. That's my biggest heartbreak regarding their breakup; not being able to go to any more live shows. "Because of You" is ever so sexy, soulful, and southern. This particular version was recorded live at their final concert. I'm one of those cheering women in the crowd. XD
Similar Artists: Oh God, they really run the gamut in style. The do Irish/Celtic, they do Alt Rock, the do folk music, Indie, all sorts of everything. I wish I had some of their more Alt Rock songs on my work computer!
Random Facts/Etc: Zach Braff found them and fell in love with them- just a few months too late to save them.

ACTUALLY, Check out their entire Between the Dim and the Dark album here. It's kick ass. I'd consider this to be more of their "Indie" album though. Magazine is their Rock album. You can listen to that on Amazon right here. Vertigo is their Artsy Fartsy album, with The Early Years (which contains The Licorice Tea Demos and Buzz) bringing up more of the Folk music style.

Cathedrals (mp3 at Box.net) is the slow pretty song that got me into their music first. But man, seriously. Check out the links for the rock as well.

Artist: Jay Clifford- Former lead singer/composer/lead guitarist for Jump, Little Children
Upload Link/File Type: These are all mp3 links for Box.net

Don't Be Fooled
Sand to Glass
Waltzing Past the Grave This one is slow and looooong, but totally my favorite.

Similar Artists: I clearly don't listen to enough music to know. Umm Jump used to play with Guster a lot. Their upright bassist now plays with Howie Day. They were chums with Carbon Leaf? Still, that was Jump (::points up:: See above!). Jay, Jay sounds something like I imagine God might. *sigh* Though this are some of his more "rockish" songs. Hmm Better than Ezra perhaps? He's actually using their drummer for this album.
Random Facts/Etc: Jay's new album Driving Blind just came out, and I highly recommend purchasing it. You can get it from his MySpace
21st-Sep-2007 02:27 pm (UTC)
Ok, time for more splinter bands.

Artist: Cabaret KiKi
Upload Link/File Type: mp3 from Box.net
Shadow on the Wall- Cabaret KiKi

Shadow on the Wall is the only one I have uploaded, but I highly suggest checking out their MySpace. I'm not sure if you can get their CD there though. :-\ It's just a little 4 track album, and I think they only sell it at shows.
Similar Artists: Old style Cabaret shows?
Random Facts/Etc: Cabaret KiKi is made up of a large group of talented artists, two of which are former members of Jump, Little Children (Evan the drummer, and his brother Matt who played... god, everything.) "Seven Ways" is probably my favorite song of theirs, but they're all great. Cary Ann Hearst is the lead singer, and she's amazing. Her other works are more country-styled, but I recommend Checking out her MySpace as well.
21st-Sep-2007 02:32 pm (UTC)
Artist: Ward Williams
Upload Link/File Type: Just a link on this one! Here's Ward's MySpace
Similar Artists:
Random Facts/Etc: Ward was Jump's cellist and one of their guitarists. I wish I had some of the mp3s to upload, but of course when I imported his album here at work, I did it as m4as. XP Ward's vocals aren't maybe as strong as Jay's or Cary Ann's, but his songs are definitely catchy. :)

Plus, check out the front page of his website. Heehee. Oh, Ward.

The other day I was cooking and got a grease stain on my Ward Williams T-shirt. I am severely pissed off by this.

Annnd one last one.

Artist: Kristina Train (formerly Kristina Beaty)
Upload Link/File Type: Her MySpace
Similar Artists: Norah Jones
Random Facts/Etc: We shot her wedding a few months ago! XD That's how I heard about her. Her stuff is really nice! I don't think she has a CD out yet, but I love what I've heard on her MySpace.
